The first Grand Lodge was founded in London in 1717. The Netherlands followed in 1734 and our Order became independent in 1756. Brotherhood in a divided world, freedom of thought in religion and science. An aspiration that is still relevant today.
Freemasonry offers seeking people in a familiar environment a method of meaning-making that, with the help of rituals and symbols, leads to self-development, fraternity and therefore a better society.
An attitude to life for free citizens. In our Order, men meet regardless of faith, race or orientation. Do you dare?
Anyone who thinks freely wants to meet others who also think freely. You don't want someone else's opinion imposed on you. No dogmas. You seek your own route through life. But not lonely, not alone. You are looking for a place where people listen to each other. Putting opinions side by side in freedom. Searching for answers to life's questions. That is what freemasons do.
With the help of freemasons from England and France, the first Dutch lodge was established in The Hague as early as 1734. This took place in the Lion d'Or lodge, later the House of Lords, which was demolished in 1986 due to the new construction of the Lower House. The establishment of a second lodge followed in 1735, then more lodges, also in other cities.
Are you looking for new answers to old questions? Are you looking for meaning, depth and significance in life? Are you looking for a method to improve yourself and help others? Then Freemasonry may be for you. Come and visit us!
